Campos – Newstead
Campos Long Island: a refined Cafe/bar with a finely detailed interior, crafted to create a new marque for Campos Coffee (Queensland). A strong, singular architectural language, inspired in part by the dense rainforests of Ethiopia, where Campos sauce much of their ethically farmed coffee beans, draws together the expansive footprint into a series of intimate cohesive spaces.
The brief demanded careful zoning, and the creation of spaces that could seamlessly flex in both size and shade to subtly shift the ambience as desired – from dark and intimate to bright and spacious, accommodating hundreds of guests on a vibrant Saturday morning, but still maintaining vibrancy on a quieter weekday afternoon.
To achieve this, the architect developed a strong, singular and contemporary architectural language – expressed as a series of horizontal and vertical layers in timber, concrete block and brass that collectively deliver lighting installations, zone compressions, tables and seating. One example is the bent brass shelving which emulates twisted jungle like vines. Another example being the suspended timber batten ceiling which emulates a canopy. This language is used cohesively to stitch together the elements of the three core spaces that comprise Campos Long Island: The Café area (the foundation zone and heart of the venue) with canopy like timber batten ceiling; the Roasting Room (a flexible space that can cater for a large private function or open to seamlessly integrate with the Cafe) and the Courtyard (an expansive space surrounded by suspended concrete slabs and dense landscaping.
